OZTF 4 - A review | 2-Apr-2004 16:11:45 | |||
| ||||
With the Grand Final approaching I thought it would be a good time to recap on current season for the benefit of those who have not seen what has unfolded. The following essay is inspired by the late Keith Stackhouse, a pioneer in the field of TF journalism. Keith’s column writing legacy was drastically cut short by J vultures that had nothing better to do than attack his columns. Keith has not written a word since, and the shame will be on Clan J’s children’s children. Anyway, back to the season that was OZTF 4. I found this OZTF be one of the more successful competitions in terms of getting games played and having some structure with no great controversy as in previous seasons. Let’s break it down. Clans There were the usual dramas with clans such as player movement, but overall most clans seemed to operate pretty well. The biggest highlight in inter-clan rivalry was no doubt the FP vs KWK games. I am personally a big FP fan due to the fact they have the best HC attacker in the world, Masschino. The abuse and feeling after the first FP KWK game was gold. The part that I found funniest is how they played the first map, then went to the forums to bag the crap out of each other, and didn’t bother to play the second map until a week later. This is the kind of rivalry is what has been missing lately in competition and was great to see some it revived. Unfortunately KwK no longer exists which is a huge shame for the community. It seemed to be pretty much the same deal as previous seasons with the other thing that ruffled some feathers being Fuh leaving AP on a Codemonkey project to FV. A hidden camera was planted in the negotiations and Team PnP can exclusively bring you the footage here. On a sidenote I think that Fuh needs to focus more time on coding and less on making videos of his PnP heroes. There are now some fresh clans on the scene including NFI and DK, which is great to see. NFI is lead by the hugely popular #Pants member _FLiP_, who will no doubt create a very good team that PnP can poach players from in future years. DK had early setbacks of losing Ned and Ralph, but have recovered well and look the goods to play in the next OZTF competition. Games Games actually got played on time in the large majority of cases, which was a huge change for the better from previous seasons. The only major issues was FV’s inability to field a team for the semi against J, and clan A showing everyone that they are a bunch of dickheads with a lame performance on spaz4. As already mentioned the highlight of the season was no doubt FP v KwK, which pulled more spectators than the TV record set by Manly vs Souths in the NRL competition last year. Qizmo cams and shoutcasts didn’t really happen this season. I sorely missed the special comments and contribution that Tigs made to the Shoutcasts. Tigs has since sold out on the TF community and is providing comments in the NFL for a seven figure sum. Maybe next season he will be back! Issues/crying This was the most improved area this season with not a lot doing in terms of crying about the competition itself. Thank God because if I had to read another 300 reply debate about fullbright skins or Forward Rocketjumps I would have had to strangle someone (perhaps DA). The only issue worthy of a mention was our very own [PnP].Sandz kicking the [AP]Huskarl (formerly known as [FV].Hava). Whilst I did not play the game, I have strong reason to believe that Sandz kicked him because he was annoyed at AP for years of whinging about forward rocketjump and fullbright skins. Thus in my unbiased opinion Sandz did not go far enough, he should of kicked every AP player on the server for crimes against humanity. I have been alerted to the hwguy attack debate which was similar to the FRJ/FB ramblings of past seasons. There were good points for changing hwguy and totally lame points for those who think that hwguy has a place on attack. Hwguy attack is gay and if you think it takes skill you have no idea. The debate ends here! Awards As always there were clear cut performances in a number of categories that deserve special recognition. The ]XF[.Rodstar. memorial award for services to the gay community- [A]. Torn. OZTF 4 was the most successful season so far for gay rights. It was always common to hear the “Rod is gay” chant from much of the community a few years ago. As Rod has since departed the OZTF scene the gay community had waited for the Second Coming of the anointed one. The wait is no more. It is difficult to go into #Oztf and not see some reference to “Torn is Gay”. I personally do not see how Torn rivals Rod or how he is worthy of such abuse, but the community as a whole has spoken. The [PnP].Sandz award for doing stuff – ]AP].Sinister. What the hell has happened to Nigel lately? Whenever he is online all he wants to do is organise games and start pugs. This is a clear contrast to the founding member of XF who didn’t even know who was in his clan. I would not be surprised if Sin becomes so keen that he organises the next OZTF competition or possibly the Olympics in Athens. With Nigel in charge these events would no doubt run smoothly. The [PnP].Zoom award for abuse on and off the field- [PnP].Zoom. Zoom was able to regain his founding award after years in the wilderness with such notable performances as Zoom vs RandomNZfags on SE2 and Zoom vs RandomNZfags on the OZTF forums. It’s great to see one of the best players in TF history back in the fold. Murd was a close second and would have undoubtedly taken this prestigious award if Zoom had not come back to TF. The [PnP]. Fatboy award for claiming detox from TF- ]AP].Twisted. Whilst there were the standard “I’m leaving TF, see you later” posts on OZTF forums, with these people returning the following week, Twist was a clear winner. Twist was the most convincing in saying that he would not be playing TF until Uni was over. He lasted an impressive four weeks before he ran out of subtle patches to curb his craving and re-installed TF (he claims under duress from AP members). The ]AP].Huskarl award for most convincing identity change - ]CFZ].Zut. Zut’s injection into pugs as “Flesh” was an impressive attempt to shield him from being required to defend. Zut managed to play two pugs before the leak was found out. Even more impressive was Flesh’s /whois on irc, revealing that he resided in #counterstrike and #randomcsclan which demonstrated the thought he had gone to conceal his identity. A late charge by perpetual award winner [changes_every_5mins_] Kicker under the name “Sh0Ck” looking to join a clan was a valiant effort that went very close to stealing this illustrious award away from Zut. The clan [FV] award for destroying the finals series by not showing up – [FV] How do FV manage to play every game in OZTF 4 without forfeiting and then come to the finals and just not bother to play?. My mind goes back to when FV wouldn’t play PnP in the final because they knew they would be owned by PnP’s recent addition of Kodiak which made them pretty much unbeatable at the time. You played the whole season so why not finish it off? So that’s OZTF4 in about a thousand words! Now onto the Grand final to top of another successful season. |
