I’ve already posted what I thought of the OZTF season and how it was probably the best season in terms of getting lots of high quality games played. However no matter how well something went, improvements can always be made! The new OZTF season is due to start in the next few weeks. The following are some of my thoughts as to what I think can be improved in the OZTF website and season to make it even better than last season. The Website I believe that Sandz (Nadz), Tones and Twist are working hard on a brand new website. I’m not sure on its current progress but here are some of my thoughts as to what might make it better than the current one. 1. Columns - Columns mustn’t be hidden away because people won’t be bothered reading them. They were the best part of the first site and the weakest part of the latest design. Improved columns is an essential feature for all the budding Keith Stackhouses out there in TF Land! The columns and comments were probably the best part of the original site. I’d like to see a wide range of people with columns from Noobs to Oldschool. B333 must get a column so that all his thoughts congregate in one area that people can avoid. This will hopefully lead to him talking less in the forums. However, he will be free to talk whatever crap he wants in his column! 2. List of clans on main page – This is really handy for those clans with websites. We had been posting stuff on the PnP website, but people didn’t know it was there because there was no link to the site from the front page. I suggest a link to information about the clan including website, players, history etc., which is assessable from the front page. 3. List of players – It’s too hard keeping up with who is in what clan so it would be handy to have a player list for each clan. This might also help to avoid problems about who is allowed to play in games. 4. Demos and Stats – A page that has all the results visible and a link to the demos and stats for the 2 maps played would be handy. It gets annoying having to wade through all the demos on a server, especially when they are auto-named. I hear that this is currently being looked into in developing the new site, with the possibility of overall season statistics. It would be good if each game played had its own page that had links to demos, stats and comments about the match, so that people doing match reports can do them with all the relevant information already in view. The Competition 1. Tighter more specific rules - These would address small things such as whose map is played first and what server will be used. These are pretty standard things but can be important. Obviously not all things can be put into rules but clearing up areas of common dispute would help the competition. 2. Disallow different topcolors - Topcolors aren’t really used for anything other than detecting spies, so I don’t see any reason to allow them. I know some teams have this as a key part of their spy detection. Top colors are easy to turn off so I don’t see any problems in implementing this rule. 3. Set dates for finals – The finals were what took the longest to complete and this was probably due to the fact that unlike round games, they did not have deadlines. A solution could be to set a Sunday at the beginning of the season that finals matches will be played on. 4. Qizmo Cams – Over the last few seasons I think we have gotten paranoid about spectators providing an unfair advantage. I think that the OZTF admin team should appoint say 10 people who they think should be given responsibility to run Qizmo cams, so that people can spectate games. Just having admins or Shoutcasters running cams hasn’t worked very well from a spectators point of view. Qizmo cams lagging servers isn’t really a big deal these days, because almost all servers can handle 4+ spectators with no problems. 5. Use non-solid detpacks as default – Since every server now has OZTF and everyone has gotten use to small changes such as grenade throwing, Pyro and Hwguy changes, I don’t think it would be a big adjustment to use non-solid detpacks. Solid detpacks are frustrating to get around and is a no-skill way to slow down the game. The current rule about being able to pass the detpack doesn’t address the problem that if you can pass it one in a million times it is legal. 6. Some rule about hwguy attack – I don’t know what the rule should be, but I think there should be something to discourage or even ban hwguy attack. Hwguy attack destroys some of the better maps we play, so my opinion is to ban it completely on attack. Obviously people will debate this, but some type of solution needs to be found before the season starts to maintain an enjoyable level of gameplay. 7. Maps – I don’t see the point in having some maps like Oppose, Shoop, Dissect, Spaz etc. if they haven’t been played in the last year. Nobody plays these maps in pugs, scrims or competition games. If people want to keep these maps in competitions they should try to get them played in pugs. I’d like to see some new maps such as Turtler being added. These are just some of my thoughts on what could make the next season and website more enjoyable and easier to use respectively. I’m sure other people have other ideas that could make the next competition even better than the last! |
