TFDE: Retribution and Beyond

23-Apr-2004
Some of you may have read about Twistâs next movie TFDE: Retribution and how he will be taking a slightly different approach this time. It looks like Twist will be integrating a story line into the movie instead of just the usual tricks and frags formula that have made his last two movies so successful. I think the greatest challenge will be trying to make the new movie stand out when not a lot of improvement has occurred in the level of skill between now and when TFDE 2 was released. For example, if you look at a demo that is a year old and compare it to a demo of today you would have difficulty deciding which demo is which.
You could even argue that the general skill has gone backwards since TFDE 2 was made. I personally think TF has reached the point where not a lot can be achieved in terms of improving individual skill. Probably because of this, Twist has decided to use a story in his next movie because the tricks and frags, whilst still being entertaining, are unlikely to have the wow factor like in his last two movies.
Teamwork- The Next Development?
The only real area that I can see future improvement is in the area of teamwork. There has always been teamwork on defense, with basic stuff such as incomings and organised set positions that have become standard. This standard doesnât really exist on attack. For example, defenders get annoyed when they donât get incomings but 99% of the time attackers donât give information that could help them work as a team. My question is why doesnât attack have an accepted equivalent to incomings and organisation?
The CBF Factor
I think the CBF factor is the biggest reason why people havenât really bothered with actually thinking about teamwork and attack strategy.
There are notable exceptions like when PnP attacks well6. I choose PnP and Well6 because I know something about it, but you could also apply it to other clans like Jâs teamwork on TF2k. People seem to think that we are only good at well6 because we have some good individuals. Sure itâs important to have good players on attack because you arenât going to get anywhere with 3 inexperienced players attacking even if they do have great teamwork. However, I think that 3 solid but not elite attackers can have a huge impact on well6 if they actually bother to make the effort. Iâd weight PnPâs attack success on well6 to about 50% on individual skill and 50% on stuff relating to teamwork. These teamwork aspects include things like knowledge of each others skills, communication such as status, flag reports etc, class balance and experience playing together.
However, on other maps we havenât really bothered with strategy as we do with well6. On maps other than well6 for PnP Iâd say that 80% is individual skill and 20% teamwork, going down to about 10% teamwork as the map becomes quicker e.g. hardcore. Even on maps like hardcore some strategy exists like designating an attacker to hassle the piper but it is mainly just individual. If clans look at teamwork I think they could make teamwork be as important as individual skills on maps other than well6. This could allow some lesser clans beat the more favoured clans individual skill wise e.g. CFZ beating PnP or J.
Another thing that can assist in teamwork is the use of Teamspeak or qizmo voice. Many clans are starting to use this and you can see a huge increase in ability when they are using voice. PnP hasnât really used voice in games even though it would probably make us harder to beat. The reason is the CBF factor! I am probably the driving force behind not using voice because I couldnât be bothered setting it up or having people wondering why the hell I am talking to myself. This demonstrates the CBF factor as a barrier to better teamplay!
Maps and Misconceptions
Why is it that whenever you go into a pug you have the token well6 haters who say boring or bail whenever it comes up? These people are often the first to pick what I consider the most boring map, hardcore. The funny thing is it is often these people who are the first to complain about how TF has become all bunnyhop and no thinking. You canât have it both ways. If people really donât want to play maps that require some thought can you at least stop being hypocrites and stick with one point of view!
As Iâve said I think that well6 is the most important map to have teamwork and that Hardcore is the least important. That leaves a lot of maps in between that havenât really been done to death like well6 has in terms of strategy. I think another reason that nobody has tried to apply much thinking on maps other than well6 is because they have the misconception that teamwork wonât have any impact on the end result. I think that this is totally wrong, even if some maps are more suited to teamwork than others. For example, I remember one game when XF got totally owned by PnP on 2fort5r because they used a strategy of a scout and 3 soldiers when everyone else used 4 soldiers. The scout would concuss the ramps defender all game and get his teammates in the basement 90% of the time. I havenât seen much teamwork like this on maps like 2fort5r even though these strategies have been effective. I think eventually someone will be bothered to apply teamwork more to other maps such as mbases and 2fort5r and dominate these maps like PnP has done with well6.
Bunnyhop and Faster Gameplay
It seems that since bunny hop has come in strategy on all maps bar w6 and tf2k has been largely ignored. You often hear people say that since bunny hop has come in you doesnât need to think. Iâd say the majority of current TF players would believe this. Sure the faster speed has reduced the need to think, but saying it has eliminated thinking altogether is ludicrous. Some strategies can be used to gain an advantage in bunnyhop friendly maps like 2fort5 as Iâve discussed. To use bunnyhop as an excuse not to think cannot be validated!
Retribution and Beyond
So there you have it, unless TF moves beyond an individual perspective to a more team based perspective then it is going to get very boring and repetitive. Since this is about the only time TF standard has been stable in 7 years I think the next phase might be actually looking at improving teamwork on attack. I think Twistâs need to implement a storyline is indicative of the current state of Teamforterss. He canât really make it more interesting just by using gameplay stuff because not a lot is changing. ! Iâd rather see successful teamwork in a movie than the odd midair and trick that can be done one in a thousand times. Do Twist a favour and start thinking about TF in terms of team strategy and feed a young Twisted some material that he can use to showcase TFDE: Retribution.
NB: I apologise that I do not convey or posses the same passion about TF as Zoom and Mess. Hopefully the word length more than compensates for this.

A Pug Return

21-Apr-2004
Today I played my first pug since a few years on mbases. The flag area is like an oldschool map we used to play heaps. You could drop nail grens in the flag to disable shit like rock. I had my arse saved plenty times by Zut2(we can only assume as a member of the zut fan club), Mercury and Fragin Babs. GG!

Decider map and All-Star game

19-Apr-2004
After numerous attempts to organise the decider map, it doesn’t look like our game against J is going to happen after all.
It looks like we will be playing against an All-Star team on Sunday because J don’t seem interested in playing. If the All-Star game consists of mostly J it will be pretty dumb considering they couldn’t be bothered finishing a competition going for months but could play us in a one off show-pony game.
The maps will be well6 and something else. There will probably be a shoutcast so stay tuned for info.
That is all!

OZTF 4 Final

7-Apr-2004
As many would be aware we played Clan J in the finals of the OZTF4 competition last Sunday. I donât think many of the spectators would disagree that it was one of the best matches of the last few years. Both teams had pretty much their best teams, which is unheard of these days. Twist and Joe shoutcasted the game and had many listeners. The mp3/mvds can be found here. The maps were the standard PnP map of choice Well6 and Jâs Selection TF2K.
Well6 â PnP victory 60-0
Lineup: Tower: Sandz/Don, Pipes: Marsh, Water: bliP Eng: Zoom attack: Bern, Sold, Toules
PnP enjoyed an early cap through some nice work on attack and continued the momentum throughout the game with caps coming at pretty regular intervals. Bern and Soldâs POVâs are a good watch with some nice cappage action. Our defense managed to lock down the map pretty well with Marsh and bliP providing a solid front line which made it difficult for their attack to get up to the tower with decent amounts of health and armour. Our other defenders were able to clean up most of the time with only a couple of major flag movements from J.
TF2K â J victory 140-90
Lineup: Steps: Sandz/Don Pipes: bliP Yard: Marsh attack: Bern, Sold, Zoom, Toules
We started TF2k really well with an early two cap lead then J fought back to go up by a couple of caps mid game. It then became cap for game with about 8 minutes to go until their attack overran our defense towards the end of the map. Our attack hit a wall towards the end of the map and stopped capping, whilst their attack piled on the caps.
The Decider
As each team won a map a decider map will be played to decide the winner of OZTF4. This map will be the oldschool favourite 2night2, which was selected at random. May the best team win :]
OZTF 4 - A review

2-Apr-2004
With the Grand Final approaching I thought it would be a good time to recap on current season for the benefit of those who have not seen what has unfolded.
The following essay is inspired by the late Keith Stackhouse, a pioneer in the field of TF journalism. Keithâs column writing legacy was drastically cut short by J vultures that had nothing better to do than attack his columns. Keith has not written a word since, and the shame will be on Clan Jâs childrenâs children.
Anyway, back to the season that was OZTF 4.
I found this OZTF be one of the more successful competitions in terms of getting games played and having some structure with no great controversy as in previous seasons. Letâs break it down.
Clans
There were the usual dramas with clans such as player movement, but overall most clans seemed to operate pretty well.
The biggest highlight in inter-clan rivalry was no doubt the FP vs KWK games. I am personally a big FP fan due to the fact they have the best HC attacker in the world, Masschino. The abuse and feeling after the first FP KWK game was gold. The part that I found funniest is how they played the first map, then went to the forums to bag the crap out of each other, and didnât bother to play the second map until a week later. This is the kind of rivalry is what has been missing lately in competition and was great to see some it revived.
Unfortunately KwK no longer exists which is a huge shame for the community.
It seemed to be pretty much the same deal as previous seasons with the other thing that ruffled some feathers being Fuh leaving AP on a Codemonkey project to FV. A hidden camera was planted in the negotiations and Team PnP can exclusively bring you the footage here. On a sidenote I think that Fuh needs to focus more time on coding and less on making videos of his PnP heroes.
There are now some fresh clans on the scene including NFI and DK, which is great to see. NFI is lead by the hugely popular #Pants member _FLiP_, who will no doubt create a very good team that PnP can poach players from in future years. DK had early setbacks of losing Ned and Ralph, but have recovered well and look the goods to play in the next OZTF competition.
Games
Games actually got played on time in the large majority of cases, which was a huge change for the better from previous seasons. The only major issues was FVâs inability to field a team for the semi against J, and clan A showing everyone that they are a bunch of dickheads with a lame performance on spaz4.
As already mentioned the highlight of the season was no doubt FP v KwK, which pulled more spectators than the TV record set by Manly vs Souths in the NRL competition last year.
Qizmo cams and shoutcasts didnât really happen this season. I sorely missed the special comments and contribution that Tigs made to the Shoutcasts. Tigs has since sold out on the TF community and is providing comments in the NFL for a seven figure sum. Maybe next season he will be back!
Issues/crying
This was the most improved area this season with not a lot doing in terms of crying about the competition itself. Thank God because if I had to read another 300 reply debate about fullbright skins or Forward Rocketjumps I would have had to strangle someone (perhaps DA).
The only issue worthy of a mention was our very own [PnP].Sandz kicking the [AP]Huskarl (formerly known as [FV].Hava). Whilst I did not play the game, I have strong reason to believe that Sandz kicked him because he was annoyed at AP for years of whinging about forward rocketjump and fullbright skins. Thus in my unbiased opinion Sandz did not go far enough, he should of kicked every AP player on the server for crimes against humanity.
I have been alerted to the hwguy attack debate which was similar to the FRJ/FB ramblings of past seasons. There were good points for changing hwguy and totally lame points for those who think that hwguy has a place on attack. Hwguy attack is gay and if you think it takes skill you have no idea. The debate ends here!
Awards
As always there were clear cut performances in a number of categories that deserve special recognition.
The ]XF[.Rodstar. memorial award for services to the gay community- [A]. Torn.
OZTF 4 was the most successful season so far for gay rights. It was always common to hear the âRod is gayâ chant from much of the community a few years ago. As Rod has since departed the OZTF scene the gay community had waited for the Second Coming of the anointed one. The wait is no more. It is difficult to go into #Oztf and not see some reference to âTorn is Gayâ. I personally do not see how Torn rivals Rod or how he is worthy of such abuse, but the community as a whole has spoken.
The [PnP].Sandz award for doing stuff â ]AP].Sinister.
What the hell has happened to Nigel lately? Whenever he is online all he wants to do is organise games and start pugs. This is a clear contrast to the founding member of XF who didnât even know who was in his clan. I would not be surprised if Sin becomes so keen that he organises the next OZTF competition or possibly the Olympics in Athens. With Nigel in charge these events would no doubt run smoothly.
The [PnP].Zoom award for abuse on and off the field- [PnP].Zoom.
Zoom was able to regain his founding award after years in the wilderness with such notable performances as Zoom vs RandomNZfags on SE2 and Zoom vs RandomNZfags on the OZTF forums. Itâs great to see one of the best players in TF history back in the fold. Murd was a close second and would have undoubtedly taken this prestigious award if Zoom had not come back to TF.
The [PnP]. Fatboy award for claiming detox from TF- ]AP].Twisted.
Whilst there were the standard âIâm leaving TF, see you laterâ posts on OZTF forums, with these people returning the following week, Twist was a clear winner. Twist was the most convincing in saying that he would not be playing TF until Uni was over. He lasted an impressive four weeks before he ran out of subtle patches to curb his craving and re-installed TF (he claims under duress from AP members).
The ]AP].Huskarl award for most convincing identity change - ]CFZ].Zut.
Zutâs injection into pugs as âFleshâ was an impressive attempt to shield him from being required to defend. Zut managed to play two pugs before the leak was found out. Even more impressive was Fleshâs /whois on irc, revealing that he resided in #counterstrike and #randomcsclan which demonstrated the thought he had gone to conceal his identity. A late charge by perpetual award winner [changes_every_5mins_] Kicker under the name âSh0Ckâ looking to join a clan was a valiant effort that went very close to stealing this illustrious award away from Zut.
The clan [FV] award for destroying the finals series by not showing up â [FV]
How do FV manage to play every game in OZTF 4 without forfeiting and then come to the finals and just not bother to play?. My mind goes back to when FV wouldnât play PnP in the final because they knew they would be owned by PnPâs recent addition of Kodiak which made them pretty much unbeatable at the time. You played the whole season so why not finish it off?
So thatâs OZTF4 in about a thousand words! Now onto the Grand final to top of another successful season.

the most important news in the world

30-Mar-2004
its about me so its gotta be good...
Played my first scrimm for the team vs ap and besides my dropouts on the wireless my sentry stopped a few little boys. I got an EMP in the water too and it bounced on his head and boom! Plus I think I gave a bit of armour here and there.. Anyways it was good to be back and playing with the best again.
I met my first jealous fan last night 'messiahhunter'. I must taste good. He got a few kills on me but all in all the prey ate the predator on this dark night.

Scrim vs AP

29-Mar-2004
While waiting for the other Finals games to finish, PnP played AP in a scrim tonight.
AP held us down for quite a while with the scores lock at 0-0.
However, it opened up and PnP came home 40 - 10.
You can view this and all other wars in the PnP Wars section.
On another note, positions which require a demoman to sit on a respawn pack and continually chuck shit at nothing, without aiming at a thing, are pathetic.
Thank You.

Just completed the semi-final match against CFZ for OZTF #4.
PnP bring home the bacon in both maps:
h4rdcore: 180 - 70
well6: 70 - 0
My prediction was correct.

There is a purpose for your anger when you are carved by a fellow PnP'er. You can feel it can't you? The tearing up on the inside. There's no point denying it. It hurts. Everybody feels it. You want to kill it but it doesn't die. The spirit lives on and when you think you've got us, we get you back...harder, stronger, faster.
I'm going to tell you a little story. Its about your life and how you came to be...
You were once a little boy in the big wide world. You were different from the average youngsters. For some reason your rejection from society led you into computer gaming. A world of acceptance for yourself. Where you could be king. Among your friends you were considered a master of gaming...one to be rekoned with. Finally, you found yourself and your pride. You became [clanX]-Wannabe.
In your eyes you are a living god. One kill after the next you can take em down...
and then you see it...you feel it... [PnP]-Anybody has joined the server. Its like some sort of adjustment to the environment...as though the server has just initiated a new command "maxfrags_per_minute uknown".
"Where does this strength come from?" you ask your own inner Obi Wan.
Unknown.
But you do know. And you won't admit it. You won't admit defeat and so you continue coming back for more. The hopeless seeker. Can you admit it? You can't deny your strongest impulse to be like us forever...

The PnP Legacy

16-Mar-2004
The Team Fortress landscape is littered with the mangled and decomposing corpses of PnP's past enemies.
So many clans have tried and then failed to remove PnP from the top of TF glory.
Our history is long and strong: Tournament after tournament of clans left mashed and bleeding in the dirt.
Now in 2004, the history continues - With PnP finishing top of the OZTF #4 ladder. There's another chance for all the wannabes to try and take PnP's crown.
The first wannabe - CFZ. Home of the sticky sheep-haired brown-tongued weiner (like Fatty) and pubeless, squeaking 16 year olds (like Wolv). The nobodys that want to be somebodys. The clan that envys the name PnP. The clan that has a hand on it while fantasising about gibbing PnP.
Can you feel a CFZ MINCING coming on? I CAN!
